1. Human Resource Development

Capacity building demands will be measured by on-site visits to Kenya and Namibia with a view to train specialists in the identification, conservation and utilisation of microbial diversity, and in managerial aspects, to contribute to country conservation activities. The envisaged on-site training at DSMZ will begin the process of building capacity among selected scientists and technicians from Kenya and Namibia. This will include:

  • Study visits for 3 Kenyan scientists and one from Namibia to DSMZ

2. African Action Plan development

A core activity to achieve the project goals is a seminar and workshop which will be held at the Methodist Guest House and Conference Centre, Lavington Green, Nairobi, Kenya, 21. -  25. Feb. 2011

The purpose of the meeting is to bring together key national, regional and global initiatives, projects and organisations to discuss BRC Networking, particularly to address capacity building issues of the GBRCN, and its linkages to other activities.  Future steps particularly in the areas of biosecurity, information systems for BRCs, ABS and international networking will be discussed. This integration meeting will be a contribution to the conservation and use of microbial diversity in sub-equatorial Africa.

International, regional and local participants and speakers will address the following issues in dedicated meeting sessions:

  • National and regional African activities and stakeholders
  • Regional, global and political initiatives for networking
  • Views of the user / stakeholder communities
  • Workshops for technical, curatorial and quality management related aspects of BRCs
  • Workshop on Access to authentic and high quality resources -  Capacity building

3. Development of project proposals

As a result of the action plan development and the prioritisation of local needs a number of project proposals will be developed and submitted to appropriate programmes to generate the human resources, create facilities and stimulate technology uptake and development in order to create BRCs in the region.
